What's in a KitKat Around the World?
Every KitKat is wafer fingers cloaked in milk chocolate — but the recipe quietly changes as it crosses borders. We lined up the standard 4-finger milk bar from seven markets to see what really differs.

So which is the least healthy?
There are two honest ways to compare a chocolate bar: by the whole bar you actually eat, and by a level 100g that strips out portion size. Bar sizes vary — India's standard 4-finger is the smallest at 38.5g, while Australia, Canada and the US run 42–45g. On a like-for-like 100g basis the US (Hershey) recipe is the sweetest of the lot.
On the measure that matters most for comparing recipes — sugar per 100g — the US (Hershey) KitKat is the least healthy, at 54.8g sugar and 7g saturated fat per 42g bar. It is also the most heavily processed version, leaning on palm kernel oil, PGPR and artificial vanillin where the UK and EU bars use named vegetable fats and natural flavourings. India's bar is the lightest both per serving and per 100g.
Same name, different makers
Outside the US, KitKat is a Nestlé product. In the United States it is made under licence by The Hershey Company, which is why the American recipe reads so differently — it lists generic "chocolate" and "nonfat/skim milk", and uses palm kernel oil, PGPR and artificial vanillin.
The fats tell the story
The UK bar names four vegetable fats — palm, shea, mango kernel and sal. Germany and Australia name palm and shea; the US and Canada use palm and palm kernel oil; and India still relies on hydrogenated and fractionated vegetable fats. Japan simply lists "vegetable oil/fat" with no detail.
Sweeter, simpler milk
The UK and EU bars use a richer mix — whole and skimmed milk powder, whey and butterfat. India collapses everything into generic "milk solids", Canada uses "modified milk ingredients", and the US leans on lactose and skim milk.
About the labels & sources
Figures are taken from official Nestlé regional sites, The Hershey Company, major retailers and Open Food Facts as labelled in June 2026. Recipes and pack sizes are reformulated periodically, and a standard single 41.5g 4-finger bar is not Japan's default format — its per-bar sugar is left out, with the per-100g figure drawn from the standard milk Mini. Always check the wrapper for the current list.
